Summer School

{Version 1 - 2.3.2003}

Seton Summer School offers a safe place for children to live and learn while having fun. As a school with a strong Catholic identity, each class prays at the beginning of each day and as a whole school on Wednesdays and Fridays. The staff also gathers on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays to pray as a sign of unity and devotion to our Creator. For the past 3 three years, Seton Summer School has seen its enrollment grow to 175 wonderful students, 25 dedicated staff members and over 30 helpful adult and high- school volunteers. We are one of the most affordable summer schools in the area offering instruction for 4 weeks at 7 hours per day at only $75 per student. Incoming Seton Kinders to Incoming Sixth graders are eligible to attend our program. The instructional day lasts from 8:00-12:30. During this time, students are taught using Wordly Wise 3000 in grades 1st through 6th to build vocabulary and EPS Phonics Plus to support phonics instruction in grades 1st through 3rd.. Grades 2nd through 6th use novels as a means of strengthening comprehension, inference and critical thinking skills. These novels include Island of the Blue Dolphins, Holes, Esperanza Rising and The Wish Giver. In the early primary grades, the focus is on building phonics and phonemic awareness using programs such as Reading A to Z and Open Court. Grades Kinder through 4th grade have full time assistants both paid and volunteer and all grades have at least 2 volunteers each. Furthermore, all grades use Summer Bridge Math as a means of supporting and fostering math skills. Classes also have the option of using the computer lab to further support instruction. Beginning with the 6th grade, each class is responsible for leading a morning assembly where they have the ability to highlight learned information or just show the extent of their creativity. In past years, classes have presented through songs, dances, and skits. Students also participate in a talent show near the end of summer school. Following the instructional day, we have extended care from 1:00-3:00. During this time, students have physical education at least 2x per week and many art activities. For the 2009 summer, we have the privilege of having an art camp for our 5th and 6th graders, quilting for our 4th graders, and many age appropriate activities for our primary students. We have new and returning volunteers who lead these afterschool activities as well as full- time staff. Several of our high school volunteers attend schools such as Sacred Heart Prep and Saint Francis. These volunteers often help in the classroom as assistants which allow focused, small group instruction. Parent volunteers assist in the kitchen and with custodial duties for volunteer hours. All volunteers are a great help during summer school. Seton summer school is definitely a well-rounded, wonderful place to be for students, parents, volunteers, and staff!
